The symptoms of this may be different for different people depending on the severity of the depression but it causes problems in the emotional behavior and general well-being of the person.
Emotional Behavior: There may be problems with concentration and making decisions. Others may find it difficult to remember things. Negativity is also prevalent with low self esteem, guilt feelings and self persecution. Some people have self destructive thoughts during a serious bout of depression.
A feeling of sadness is prevalent. No enjoyment is found in any activity. One can become demotivated. A feeling of slowing down, exhaustion, irritability and difficulty in controlling your temper may exist. Also, a feeling of being absolutely helpless in a hopeless situation may be prevalent.
Behavioral Change: Certain changes in behavior occur as a result of the negative thoughts and feelings that are dominant. One may appear to be listless and disinterested. Some people become recluse and withdraw from company. Others may lose their appetite or eat too much. Due to excessive sadness one may end up crying too much. Still others either start to complain or give into temper outbursts. Sexual drive and desire may also decline, and in a severe case, even basic hygiene and physical appearance may be neglected. In such extreme cases, work productivity and even the household responsibilities get neglected.
Physical Changes: These depressions are linked with chronic fatigue and the fatigue may exist even when the person is sleeping for extra hours. There are others who may not sleep at all or do not get good enough sleep. They can be awake for hours or get disturbed sleep. Many people slow down; lose their appetite or even experience aches and pains. Still others may get too restless and find it difficult to relax in any place.
If these symptoms last for several weeks, one must see a psychologist to decipher your problem and help you to get well. He may suggest taking Lexapro or Prozac, anti depressant drugs. Lexapro is given for major depression and works by boosting levels of serotonin, one of the chief chemical messengers in the brain and Prozac or Fluoxetine hydrochloride is another drug that is used medically in the treatment of such depressions.
Depressions are curable provided you are ready to get cured so do make the effort to see the psychologist and get yourself back to normal! Just remember do not medicate yourself, leave that for the psychologist to decide and follow that to the last detail!
