Caring for your dentures properly is essential to maintaining a healthy mouth and getting the full use out of your prosthetic dental device. After all, you do not want to have to replace those pricey false teeth before you should!

Daily Cleaning
Every day, use a soft bristled toothbrush to clean your dentures. Much like brushing your teeth, this removes food and plaque from the prosthetics. When you brush them, brush your gums and tongue also to remove any debris that may be on them. Never use any type of household cleaner on your false teeth. If necessary, use a mild dish soap or cleaner designed for dental prosthetics.

Careful Handling
Your prosthetic teeth are quite fragile. If you drop them, even from a short distance (like from your hand to the bathroom sink counter), they will break. Before you remove them from your mouth, fill the sink with water or line the counter with a soft towel. This gives them some cushion if you should inadvertently drop them.

When handling your dentures, do not wrap them in a paper towel or tissue. Someone might accidentally mistake the paper towel for trash and throw away your teeth!

Proper Storage
When you are not wearing your teeth, you must store them properly. If they dry out, they will warp, and you will not have a good fit. This could even cause the need to replace them. To store your prosthetic teeth, place them in water. Make sure the water is not hot, because this can also warp them. Some dentists will recommend a solution designed for false teeth. Use this instead of water if you wish.

Store your teeth out of reach of your pets or any children in your home. Pets love to chew on dental devices. Children often think false teeth are toys. Either scenario usually ends with broken dentures. Also, store your teeth away from the edge of the sink or counter. You do not want the container they are in to get pushed off or spilled. This could break the device or allow it to dry out. Carefully consider the location where you will store these.

Even though your dentures are not a part of your body, you should care for them like they were. With the right care and cleaning, your dental device will give you many years of use. This saves both money and frustration, as you will not have to replace them before their time is up.
