A general dentist is the first line of defense when in regard to oral health issues. Although these physicians provide preventative care as well as some minor restorative treatments, more often than not, they are able to offer solutions to a wide array of problems, including various cosmetic treatments. In this article we will outline a few of the different types of procedures you may find available through a general dentist.

While most general practitioners typically decided against attending postgraduate specialist programs, their training does not always end with traditional dental school. Many dentists acquire additional education by means of attending a variety of lectures, and participating in different types of hands-on workshops. In this way, many physicians are able to continue their education while still operating a general practice.

During a typical examination, the dentist will use instruments, radiographs, tests, and clinical expertise to determine potential oral health threats. Using these tools, a plan is devised in order to treat and prevent various disease states. Where cosmetic issues are involved, the dentist will engage in a discussion to best determine the esthetic hopes and goals.

Some types of procedures typically performed by general dentists include:

Fillings: Dental fillings are a solution used to help repair damage to the structure of a tooth. This damage can come across in the form of decay, trauma, or general wear. Once the problem is removed, the tooth is then restored with a filling material. Depending on the type of treatment required, this filling can be anything from gold to porcelain, each with it’s own set of advantages and downfalls. Your physician will work with you to determine the best solution based on your individual needs.

Bonding: This is a word used to describe the process of using various types of resins to adhere materials to the tooth’s surface for restorative purposes. Bonding is a common solution to cracked and chipped teeth.

Orthodontics: Crooked or misaligned teeth may be straightened and corrected through the use of dental braces and retainers. This type of specialty has become an increasingly popular solution for a variety of functionality and cosmetic issues.

Root Canals: This type of therapy can remove infected pulp tissue within the root of an individual tooth. Once the tooth has been hollowed, it is then filled with an antibacterial filling. A crown in then applied for added protection.

While many other types of specialties exist, you may want to consult your oral physician to see what types of services they have to offer prior to exploring outside options. You may be surprised at what you find.
