Dental Implant Candidacy |

If you are missing at least one tooth, have a sound dental foundation and are in good overall health, you are probably a viable candidate for dental implants. |

With the exception of children, whose bone structure is still developing, patients of all ages can enjoy the benefits of dental implants. Qualities of good dental implant candidates include:
• Healthy gums
• Sufficient bone structure to anchor dental implants in the jaw
• Commitment to taking care of your dental implants and the surrounding teeth and gums
If you have inadequate bone structure in your jaw, you may still be eligible to receive dental implants. In some cases, bone grafting can be performed to provide a suitable base in which to secure your implants.
There are some factors that may make you a poor candidate for dental implants. For example, pregnant women are generally advised to wait until after childbirth to schedule dental implant procedures.
Some medical conditions—such as high blood pressure or diabetes—can also increase the risk for dental implant failure, as can smoking and heavy drinking. If you suffer from periodontal disease, you may require treatment to restore your gums prior to scheduling your dental implant procedures.
Although dental implants can be effective for many patients with missing teeth, they are not the best option for everyone. If your implant dentist does not believe that dental implants will successfully fuse with your jawbone, he or she will recommend an alternative treatment such as partial dentures, full dentures or bridges.
