Dental Implant Alternatives

Dental implants offer the only permanent solution for missing teeth, but root form, or traditional dental implants, may not be ideally suited for every patient. In order to receive a dental implant, you must have sufficient jawbone structure to support the implant.

Otherwise you run the risk of implant failure such as a loose implant, or the loss of an implant altogether. Fortunately, many dentists now offer dental implant alternatives. With these options, you can still have the benefit of a secure replacement for missing teeth, even if you lack sufficient jawbone structure to support a traditional implant.

Types of Dental Implants

Root form implants are the most common, but may not be available to everyone. In some cases, your dentist may recommend bone grafting to increase the width and depth of your jawbone, making root form implants an option. If bone grafting is not an option, alternatives to root form dental implants are available. These include:

• Plate form implants – better for people with narrow jaws for whom bone grafting is not an option, plate form implants are long and narrow, making them an ideal alternative
• Subperiosteal implants – these implants sit above the bone, but below the gums, and are best for people with insufficient jawbone density and height
Working with a skilled and experienced dentist, you can determine what dental implant option is best for you.

Other Alternatives to Dental Implants

It is possible that no dental implant option is suited to meet your needs. When this is the case, your dentist can offer other alternatives for tooth replacement. The most common forms of non-implant tooth replacement are dental bridges and dentures. While neither of these options can offer the strength and security of a dental implant, they are still viable and attractive options for increasing bite strength, and restoring aesthetic appeal to your smile.

Both of these options have come a long way over the past several years. Where once dentures were cumbersome and uncomfortable, modern dentures are customized to your mouth, and provide a seamless, functionally strong smile. There are several types of dental bridges that can be used to correct your smile as well. In some instances, your dentist may combine bridges with dentures to eliminate your need for adhesives.

No single solution is ideal for every mouth. Your dentist will carefully evaluate your jaw and help you determine what tooth replacement option will best suit your needs.
