Sinus Pain and Sinusitis
Sinus pain is just one of the symptoms of sinusitis. When you have sinusitis, this means that your sinuses are infected or inflamed. Infection usually starts when there is blockage in your sinuses, impairing the normal drainage of mucus. Because of this, mucus is trapped inside the sinuses, along with bacteria, viruses, fungi and other unwanted elements. Where you feel sinus pain really depends on which of your sinuses are affected. If your frontal sinuses are infected, sinus pain can be felt above your eyebrows. Pain felt in the upper jaw, teeth and cheeks indicates infection in the maxillary sinuses. Infection is in the ethmoid sinuses when pain is felt around the eyes and sides of the nose. Lastly, sinus pain felt around the eyes and at top of the head and temples are signs of sphenoid sinuses being infected.
So who gets sinusitis? Actually, anyone can catch sinus infection and experience sinus pain. However, there are some people with increased risk of developing sinusitis. Those people suffering from allergies are identified to be of high risk. Constant exposure to allergens often triggers allergic reactions, which may cause swelling in the sinuses. Those with deformities in the nose that gets in the way of mucus flow are also prone to sinusitis. Also at risk are those people who are frequently exposed to infection, such as health workers. Finally, people who smoke are also prone to sinus infections as smoke causes irritation of the mucus membranes.
Home Remedies to Relieve Sinus Pain
One of the most popular home remedies is nasal irrigation. The saline solution used in nasal irrigation is helpful in clearing out excess mucus and killing bacteria. Another home remedy recommended to soothe the inflamed sinuses and relieve sinus pain is steam treatment. Hot compresses to the face and taking hot showers also have the same effect.
