Data protection

Worrying survey shows that we do not trust retailers. Especially online ones.

A survey carried out by GB Group (a data security specialist) has shown that only 9% of us trust mobile phone companies and retailers to keep our personal data safe. Sadly this means that the mobile phone industry is at the bottom of the ‘trust’ scale with the likes of online gambling companies.

However, as a reaction to recent announcements about data loss a measly 25% of us don’t even trust the government to keep our details safe. And 48% of us don’t even trust our high street bank or building society to protect our details from identity thieves.

To avoid being a victim of identity theft just under half of the people surveyed would actually be prepared to give up online shopping. It seems it is the older generation that is more wary of online shopping and banking, only 19% of those aged 45-54 are happy with online business, compared to 40% of 18-25 year olds.

This survey is a wake up call for online businesses – they clearly have a way to go before consumer trust is won over. Companies need to demonstrate clearly to customers that they are doing everything possible to protect their data, to win back trust.

Clearly this is just one side of the argument and there are many more customers that are more than happy to shop online to get a better deal, with many retailers offering better mobile deals from their online store than their high street store.
