Plastic surgery tourism is a relatively new phenomenon. There are two types of plastic surgery tourists:

• Those that vacation to places with the best surgeons
• Those that vacation to places with the cheapest prices

Vacationing for the Best Plastic Surgeon

The type of tourist that chooses the place to vacation for the best surgeon does plenty of research before deciding. This tourist makes sure that the plastic surgeon:

• Is highly trained and experienced
• Is board certified in plastic surgery
• Has plenty of plastic surgery patient "before and after" photos to see results

This tourist needs to keep a few things in mind before taking the plastic surgery vacation of choice:

• Is there a comfortable place to stay at least one week for recovery?
• Is there a family member or close friend willing to stay during recovery?
• Does the plastic surgeon require several check-up visits to see how the recovery is going?

Many reputable plastic surgeons have a list of local hotels and accommodations for their out of town plastic surgery patients. They want to make sure their out of town patients are well cared for and do not feel lost and forgotten during their stay.

Tourists Vacationing for Cheap Plastic Surgery

Many countries offer cheaper prices for plastic surgery. This is very attractive to those who feel they cannot afford plastic surgery in the United States. There is one very great danger to receiving surgery outside of the U.S. – no one knows what the standard of care is used by doctors in other countries.

United States plastic surgeons must adhere to certain standards of care for their patients mandated by the medical community. They must provide a clean environment with well-kept and up-to-date medical machines and utensils. They must provide an excellent standard of care and are held liable if any complications occur.

Patients who have traveled outside of the U.S. for surgery have experienced:

• Waking up during surgery
• Contracting infections that destroy the skin around incisions
• Getting rare bacteria in the blood
• Surgeons performing too much surgery at one time

There is a great danger to going to a plastic surgeon out of the country. Some patients return home without any complications, but many find themselves in hospitals fighting for their lives or seeing a plastic surgeon in the U.S. to repair the surgery that went wrong. Your body cannot be replaced. It is very important to see a plastic surgeon who values your body and life as much as you do.
