If you are set on changing the appearance of your home but do not know where to start, consider custom stairs. You can alter your existing staircase slightly with new railings, or you can replace it completely with a new set of stairs.

Having a staircase is a requirement in a two-story house, but it does not have to look the same as every other homeowner's. Instead of installing the typical steps in your house, think about the types of custom stairs available. Making this decision can help set your house apart from any other.

Not every home would benefit from a traditional straight wooden staircase, or even spiral steps. Of course it can be made to look unique with subtle changes, but some homeowners prefer to have a different shape entirely.

One example of custom stairs is a set that is in the shape of a Y, with two separate landings at the top to enter by, coming together at the bottom. This type could be especially useful in a home that is rather wide, or perhaps has two separate wings.

If you have chosen a particular shape but want to alter the smaller details, you can concentrate on making the steps unique. Instead of using the same carpeting or wood seen throughout the entire house, you can have a separate color, or even different surface materials altogether, on the steps.

You may also choose to leave off the back of each step so that you can see under your custom stairs. This is typically most popular in basements, but is also a possibility for any floor in the house.

Most staircases have railings on the side for extra comfort and safety. They are typically made of wood, but you can have extra details added to them. This may include a round knob at the end of each rail to add some elegance, or you may consider changing the shape of each rail from rectangular to circular.

You can also add ornate details all along the railings, such as swirls, vines, and other shapes that can set your staircase apart. This step is also often cheaper than replacing an entire set of stairs, so keep it in mind if you are on a budget.

Just because you need steps to get from one floor to the next does not mean that you have to settle for ordinary designs. You may decide to change the appearance of your home severely by opting for a circular staircase with custom railings that show off handcrafted designs, or you may just add classy knobs to the end of each rail. No matter what you prefer, you have plenty of options to set your home apart through custom stairs.
