Cataracts are a serious eye condition affecting a large portion of the population over the age of 65. It is caused by a clouding of the eye due to proteins in the lens which deteriorate and begin to clump. As a result, a fuzzy image is transferred to the retina, causing blurred vision. If untreated, cataracts can eventually lead to blindness.

Advances in cataract surgery have made the procedure both safe and effective. Intraocular lenses (IOLs) can be used to replace your eye’s natural lens so that you can once again see clearly.

Crystalens IOL

The Crystalens IOL is a revolutionary new intraocular lens. It is an accommodating IOL, which means that it can flex and adjust to address various visual conditions. The central optic portion of your Crystalens IOL works in conjunction with your eye muscles to move around and focus on the different visual images nearby. As a result, the back of your eye will only receive one image, making it easier for the brain to process visual stimuli.

The Crystalens procedure is relatively simple and can be performed on an outpatient basis. Your ophthalmologist will numb your eyes before performing the surgery. A micro-seal is then created on the perimeter of your cornea. Your ophthalmologist will wash away your cloudy natural lens and replace it with a Crystalens IOL.

Crystalens IOL vs Standard IOLs

Most standard IOLs can only correct your vision for one distance. You would either be able to see near images well or far images well, but not both. If you suffer from presbyopia as well as cataracts, you would still require corrective lenses to see well at close distances.

Crystalens IOLs are able to correct vision at multiple distances. Therefore, your Crystalens lens can correct vision issues caused by both cataracts and presbyopia. Most Crystalens patients can see both near images and far images well, and they do not need corrective lenses after the procedure. Currently, Crystalens is the only FDA-approved accommodating IOL available in the United States that corrects both cataracts and presbyopia.
