Ever since I wrote and published my own eBook, people have been asking me how I did it—specifically, how did I create such an eye-catching, color, professional book cover. The answer is I created it myself. More and more people are taking advantage of self-publishing to get their important messages out to the world. You certainly have knowledge that others don’t. Putting your thoughts, ideas and knowledge into writing is a great way to share and possibly make a little money. The Internet and globalization have been a huge boon for sharing your knowledge with others. The number of eBooks being created and sold is phenomenal. It’s relatively easy to take your information from a word processing document and convert it into a .pdf (portable document format) that allows others to download it from the Web. The dilemma most people face is in creating an eye-catching eBook cover.

Let’s face it, the cover helps to draw attention to your book. People are attracted to colorful yet simple designs that help to convey the overall message of your book. If you can afford to do it, you should hire a graphic designer to create your book cover. If you know Photoshop or other graphics programs, you can design it yourself. If you can’t do either of those options, there are quick and affordable alternatives. If you have a fairly good eye for images and how they communicate a concept or idea, you can opt to do your own, simple book cover and place it directly into your word processing document.

MS Office products come with their own clipart and photo library, or you can search online for “free photos” or “free graphics.” Find an image that is relevant to your eBook topic. Next, insert the image into your word processing document. In MS Word, the process is INSERT, PICTURE, FROM FILE. Once the image is imported, you want to select the picture then click on Text Wrapping and select BEHIND TEXT. Adjust the size of the image next by dragging on one of the corner pieces of the image. If you select a center or side dot, the image will change shape. Type your title, subtitle and your name over top of the image in a contrasting color. That gives you a very simple, but effective cover.

If art simply isn’t your niche, don’t worry. There are still free and/or affordable software options that make designing a professional, polished eBook cover a breeze. One of the most affordable and simple processes I’ve seen is an Instructional eBook (see what I mean about people self-publishing?) that shows you how, step-by-step to create your fabulous cover using freeware.
