Coaching employees can be difficult. It's painful when you are coaching employees on private topics. If you put things off, you will be shocked how they are privy to many things, though they do not know a lot.

Nearly everybody feels uncomfortable when coaching subordinates, yet few are willing to admit that they feel ambivalent or inadequate. Those that take pride on their lack of hesitation are usually over aggressive like bulldozers. In fact, coaching subordinates is dangerous (you may lose control of the discussion), and you are vulnerable (you have to substantiate your side and your leadership methods may be questioned by the subordinate). Your fears become exaggerated and you get winded, you start to worry, and find ways to delay or avoid it. But deep down, you are aware that this isn't a helpful strategy.

Many leaders reason that a topic does not merit a coaching session because it's unimportant. This may affect both you and the employee later, especially when the employee's work is under evaluation for advancement, movement, or performance appraisal.

To avoid hurting subordinates that could ruin performance is the main reason why leaders resist coaching. Because of this, they are overlooking the reality that a good coaching session may actually improve things further.

Trust, directness, and honesty are appreciated by most subordinates. Unless leaders learn to shake off ambivalence and hesitation, quality, efficiency, and excellence cannot be achieved.

You must know that it's natural to resist seemingly difficult situations. These shouldn't get in your way. Your ambivalence and hesitation should be anticipated. You can move forward and trust the eight-step coaching process to help.
