When a customer makes a purchase, they are usually asked if they want to be on a mailing list. Those that sign up are rewarded by special deals and discounts. They are notified before anyone else that a retailer is offering a discount. This jump up on the competition allows them to take advantage of the offer before supply runs out. This is especially helpful during holiday shopping periods where hot items can sell out quickly, leaving many shoppers empty handed.
In addition to receiving notifications in their email, they often receive coupons and discounts via fliers that are sent through the mail. Like email notifications, they can take advantage of these specials right away and get there before anyone else does.
Coupons are nothing new and have been around for years with many retailers using them as an important part of their marketing strategy. They are quite useful when introducing new products where consumers might not be familiar with the name. Coupons encourage customers to try something new because they’re getting it a reduced cost. This strategy works because if they like it after they try it on sale, then they will keep buying it, even at full price. This builds on brand recognition and loyalty where more people will become faithful users of a product once they’ve had an opportunity to buy it first.
Sometimes a retailer may have too much inventory. This can be due to demand not being as great as they thought or a simple clerical error. Either way the merchant must move the merchandise as soon as possible. If it sits in the warehouse for too long, it is likely to become outdated where there will be declining interest. This is where coupons can be used to offer substantial savings to move this merchandise before the retailer must sell it at a loss. When this happens, sending out a notification to their mailing list or sending out fliers with coupons will spark an interest in the product. Some consumers may have thought about buying a particular product, but were put off by the full price. These reduced prices will entice them to purchase and this takes the product off of the merchant’s hands.
Coupons provide many benefits for both consumer and merchant. When they offer benefit to both they are achieving the intended goal. The right coupon is determined by what is being purchased, when it’s being purchased and in what quantities. Sometimes it’s better to wait to use a coupon, and other times the best time to use it is now. It all depends on the pricing schedule, store discount schedule and the item being purchased.
If you have a favorite retailer, get on their mailing list so that you can take advantage of coupons that they reserve for their loyal customers. This will insure the most savings when you get to checkout.
