The system files are used by the NTFS file system for storing the file system metadata and for implementing the file system. NTFS system files are put on Windows hard drive volume through Format utility. NTFS file system includes the following significant system files:
Master File Table- It contains a base file record for every file/folder on NTFS volume. If allocation information for file/folder is so large that can not fit in single record, new file records are also allocated.
Master File Table 2- It is a duplicate copy of initial four records of MFT.
Log File- Stores details of the transaction steps, which are used to recover NTFS file system. This file is used for restoring consistency to the NTFS in case of system failure.
Volume- Holds volume information, such as volume version, volume label, and volume size.
Attribute Definitions- Table of the attribute names, descriptions, and numbers.
Boot Sector- Contains BPB, which is used for mounting NTFS volume. Also includes additional bootstrap loader code if volume is bootable.
NTFS Extension File- It is used for several optional extensions like quotas, object identifiers, and reparse point data.
If any of these files are damaged or missing due to file system corruption, operating system malfunction, virus infection, or improper system shutdown, data loss occurs. In such circumstances, NTFS Partition Recovery applications are required to retrieve lost data.
