Follow certain points when starting your career as a copywriter:

• Initially write as much as you can.
• Practice by developing the copy for sample ads and advertising campaigns.
• Make a good portfolio of the best work done and your qualification. Prospective employees will want to see your background and past performance if having any experience in this field.
• Study various magazines and newspapers, trade periodicals to get better techniques and knowledge about copywriting.
• You can join any advertising agency to learn in copywriting. You can make a list of advertising agencies where you can try. Make some samples with your portfolio which you can show at the time of interview.
• You can get experience not only by joining an advertising agency, but also in a store advertising department or the department of news paper or magazines.

There is a hierarchy in copywriter as student or trainee, junior copywriter, copywriter, senior copywriter. Although any graduate can start his/her career as copywriter but it is prior to having qualification Bachelor’s degree in advertising, journalism, communication, English, public relations, or business required. A person having experienced in writing has much priority to prove best in this field. Some special skills and personal traits are required like good writing and communication skills, creative, ambitious and articulate thinking is preferred.

There are a major difference between working as a copywriter for a regular advertising agency and performing the job in a direct response advertising agency. The copywriter prepares the majority of the copy for direct mail and response selling instead of mass market advertising, such as commercial and advertisements on national television or in national print publications. The copywriter is responsible for developing both advertising and sales concept. The point of the advertisement is to get people to call or write in at that moment or order.
