Painting is one of the more preferable parts of decorating your home, but that doesn’t mean there’s no work involved. In fact, it takes a fair amount of thought—and even some trial and error—in order to find a tone which will suit your room for a long time. Usually, an eager homeowner will just pick out her favorite color and eventually set out to work. Hence, the paint either clashes with the room decorations or becomes too plain.

So how to avoid all these classic mistakes? One thing you may do is play a bit with your colors. Don't just think of the ordinary stripes and solids, neutrals and pastels, whites and blacks. Sometimes, just a single vibrant choice of color can create a difference between a room that’s lifeless and one which brims with life. Here are some sensational color tips you can try in your bedroom.

Use various colors. Can’t decide on just a single color? Use two colors. Alternate the colors between walls so that you have two similar colored walls that face each other. This would be great for roommates or couples who have different preferences in color. Colors contrasting each other work best—try pink and blue, orange and green, or purple and yellow. If you wish to go with this style, make sure that the rest of your fixtures in a neutral shade (like wood or metal), if not, there’ll just be way too much color in the room.

Make use of contrast. Contemporary designs tend to be minimalist and clean, favoring stark blacks and whites. While this is definitely sassy, it can become boring after a while. If you adore minimalist design but also want the bold and whimsical, try adding a smattering of color to your stark white wall. It may be a simple stripe or a delicate floral detail. The point is to shatter the dullness of solid colors, so the eye continuously moves around the room.

Try Experimenting with textures. There are colors which are just too dull or lifeless to paint a whole room with. Off-white, beige, and cream are some of the more usual examples. If you approve of these colors, you may give them life by giving them some texture. Try to look for a paint roller with a pattern on it or try using a sponge for application for a rougher finish. Limit textures to just one wall, though—overdoing it will make the room seem cramped and messy.

Reverse your colors. Most people will choose cream, white, or off-white for the furniture, utilizing the more vibrant colors for the wall itself. If you’re feeling bold, try doing the reverse: opt for a lighter color for the walls and a richer, darker shade for the trims and edges. You may also go for a light wall and dark curtains (if you have enough lighting to get away with that), or brightly colored fixtures on a neutral or wood-finished wall. Just make sure the colors still work together, and that you can live with it for a long period of time.

Make your own shades. If you can’t find anything you want on the palette, try creating shades of your own. Get a small portion of each of your favorite colors, and just mix and match until you end up with a shade you like. It can even be a fun activity for you and your kids! Just be certain to note down all your matches, so you may easily re-create your shade when it’s time to paint.

Create Drawings. A solid hue is sometimes just not enough, no matter how bold and vibrant the color is. If textures and patterns don’t appeal to you, why not draw something on the walls yourself? You wouldn't need to paint a whole mural—just a few vibrant lines in the right places can make a big difference. For something less permanent, you can opt for a wall decal or a detail from old wallpaper patterns.

Make a feature wall. A feature wall is just a wall that’s aesthetically unique from the rest of the room, either by texture, decoration, or color. Choose a wall that’s visible from any part of the room, so that it will serve as your focal point. Color it with a bolder color than your other walls and set it off with different wall accents such as hanging shelves, grilles, paintings, or picture frames. If you do it right, your feature wall can bring life to even the dullest color schemes.
