Such a simple name for such a rugged area; a region that remains relatively untouched and complete under-explored Cooktown remains as one of the world's truest wilderness areas.

This area of the Cape has a coastal area where no one disturbs the environment, it has unbelievable archaeological artifacts that are approximately 30,000 years old. It also has a fabulous collection of tropical birds, and natural habitats for many other creatures. Cooktown, a long time Aboriginal area, is named after the explorer and navigator who discovered this area, Captain James Cook.

Back in the day, Cooktown was a thriving gold mining location, but currently serves as a quiet and serene setting for natives and visitors to soak up the natural beauty and historical significance of the region. The Cape region is a wilderness area and is more a vacation spot for the adventurer than the person looking for 5 star accommodations. There are few modern amenities in this region, but it is an area that can allow for some of the most amazing experiences you can imagine.

In this area are 100 islands called the Torres Strait Islands, but just 19 are inhabited by the native people. A couple of the islands with people are named Thursday Island and Poruma Island, Thursday is the center of the islands and is the administration area, Poruma is a wonderful location to visit. The islanders who live here are welcoming, friendly, talented with arts and crafts, fishing and dancing.

As a traveler wishing to connect with the culture, nature and people who live there the Cooktown, Cape York and Torres Island area is where you'd want to be. This region will offer the rich heritage of the people and area, there are museums and tours to help introduce this to the visitors. Here there are wonderful people but they do have some alcohol restrictions within their communities so please be respectful if you're visiting.
