Protecting your vision is an important concern when you are setting up an office or a computer workstation. Extensive computer work can cause vision problems in the long term, even leading to an eventual diagnosis of myopia, or nearsightedness. |

What Computer Ergonomics Means
Ergonomics refers to the practice of arranging a workspace so that it is ideal for the person using it. Computer ergonomics refers to the arrangement of the computer workstation itself so it is set up in the best way for its user. Ergonomics can take into account the type of chair used, the type of keyboard and/or mouse, how the monitor is angled and its height, as well as lighting and other issues that can affect the ability to easily read the screen.
Some basic guidelines to ensure proper computer ergonomics include:
• The top of the monitor should be slightly below your eye level
• The work area should provide adequate lighting
• The monitor should be shielded or angled in such a way as to prevent glare
• You should be able to look at the monitor straight on, not at an angle
In combination, these measures will help keep your vision healthy and prevent computer vision syndrome, or CVS. You can also take additional measures such as taking frequent breaks away from the computer screen.
Protecting Your Vision
If, in spite of these measures, you still find yourself suffering from eyestrain, headaches, fatigue or other symptoms of vision issues, see your ophthalmologist to have your eyesight evaluated. Computer glasses, reading glasses or bifocals can help correct vision problems related to extensive computer use.
