What, then, is causing all of these car accidents? When the statistics are in front of us, the answer becomes clear: drivers themselves are the single greatest threat to drivers.
The Top 3 Most Common Causes of Car Accidents
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the top three most common causes of car accidents today are:
1. Distracted Driving – Current research tells us that up to 30% of all accidents in the country have distracted driving as their root cause. Distractions can range anywhere from using a cell phone to eating while driving. However, a study conducted by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles found that texting and rubbernecking accounted for 16% of all crashes caused by distracted driving.
2. Fatigued Drivers – The work day for the average American is much longer and busier than it used to be. We tend to get up earlier and go to bed later just to maximize the amount of time we have in each day. Unfortunately, this has posed new dangers on the road. Drowsy drivers now account for nearly 100,000 accidents every year in the US. Symptoms of fatigued driving include frequent yawning, heavy eyelids, drifting over road lines, and seeing things that “jump out” in the road. The Motor Accidents Authority (MAA) recommends that drivers on long road trips take a break at least every two hours, and get a good night’s sleep before any long trip.
3. Drunk Driving – This is the most notorious cause of car accidents today, as drunk driving crashes tend to be more severe than other types. Preventing these types of accidents is easy, but people still make the choice to get behind the wheel when intoxicated, putting their own lives and the lives of others in danger.
Aggressive driving and weather are two other common car accident causes. Still other accidents are caused by hazardous road conditions, weather, or a defective vehicle.
When you get out on the open road, driving should take all of your attention and concentration. You not only need to ensure you are driving safely, but that you are aware of the behavior of the drivers around you, and of any environmental factors that could compromise your driving.
