Color Vision Problems |

Problems with color vision are not uncommon. About eight percent of all white males suffer from color blindness. Color vision problems can be congenital or a side effect of a more serious health problem. |

Congenital, or inherited, color blindness is much more common in men than in women. Since it is a recessive trait carried on the X chromosome, women are much more likely to be carriers of the gene than to be color blind. The most common type of congenital color blindness is inability to distinguish between red and green. Blue-yellow color blindness occurs less commonly. Another form of color blindness, in which the eye perceives no colors at all, is even rarer.
There is no cure for congenital color blindness, but some therapies can help sufferers learn to distinguish the colors they are able to see. Special glasses can also help in some instances. Children who are having trouble in school should be evaluated for congenital color blindness, as the inability to distinguish colors can have a detrimental effect on their school performance.
Other Causes of Color Blindness
Other conditions can also lead to color blindness. Some of these are relatively benign, while others are serious. Among these causes of color blindness is:
• Multiple sclerosis
• Alcoholism
• Diabetes
• Macular degeneration
• Glaucoma
Some people even experience a decrease in the ability to distinguish colors as they grow older. In addition, certain medications, such as blood pressure or heart medicines, or exposure to certain chemicals may also lead to color vision problems. Any sudden change in your ability to distinguish colors should be brought to your eye doctor’s attention immediately, as should any sudden change in your vision overall.
