Unfortunately, the fact that the young driver is viewed as risky may mean a sudden increase in car insurance. When this happens, there are some things parents can do to decrease the total amount. That being said, following are some tips on how to get a cheap college student car insurance on parents.
Grades
Good grades will also be a huge factor when lowering car insurance for college students. Ideally, they should be able to maintain an average of 3.0 or higher to benefit from lower insurance costs. The reasoning for this is that students who are responsible for their studies must also be responsible in other aspects of their life, specifically driving. In fact, adults who attain higher education are also allowed this kind of lower-insurance privilege due to the implications of responsibility.
Vehicle
When it comes to college student car insurance, they type of car they will be driving will also be closely monitored. Is it an expensive brand or is it an average vehicle ideal for the public? An inexpensive car usually means lower rates. However, that doesn't mean that the car has to be old because this will do the exact opposite. The vehicle must remain safe and serviceable without being too expensive for the user. Anti-theft devices installed in the vehicle would also lower the premium rates of the driver.
Driving Situation
The frequency of how the student drives should also be in consideration. For example, do they use the car to drive to and from the school or do they only use it during school breaks? Some insurance companies will make allowances for situations like these depending on how often the driver is at risk behind the wheel. Of course, this kind of option is not always visible in the application process and should therefore be inquired by the parents.
Never assume anything when it comes to college student auto insurance applications. Ideally, parents should not only research as much as they can about a viable coverage extension but also talk to their children about the situation.
