Have you been searching for the right company for your move? Most moving companies claim to be the best in town, but some just aren’t as good as the rest. Knowing what to look out for can help you in choosing the right company.

One of the first things you should do when searching for movers is to search at a local level. You can visit the local Better Business Bureau website to start your research on those companies. The BBB will keep records of any complaints that have been filed by a customer and notes about how the company responded to them. Keep in mind, however, that the BBB is not run by the government and has been rumored to fix rankings based on whether or not a company pays them fees for registration. It’s important not to base your entire decision on those records.

While considering interstate movers, request a copy of their price structure. Companies are required to give you the breakdown of their basic fees. By doing so you can get more definite information than a non-binding estimate, and it doesn’t obligate you using that company.

Contact the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) for reports on any interstate movers you are considering. The reports can guide you in understanding the performance and customer service of these companies.

Never forget that you are the customer who is hiring the company to do a service for your benefit, and you have every right to ask the company for references. The company should be able to provide you with the numbers of people who have had a positive experience with their services.

While you are making the decision, find out if the company uses subcontractors or if everyone is employed directly by the company itself. Be sure to inquire about the training of the moving crew. A crew that is poorly trained can damage your belongings and can also hurt themselves to the point that they will not be able to complete your move as scheduled.

By choosing your moving company with care, you can avoid many problems. Find a company that is reliable and has fair prices and that uses the best labor and customer service practices.
