For many people buying a new mobile phone deal can be a daunting and confusing experience. I have noted some points below to take into account when choosing a new contract that will hopefully stop you from being scammed into an expensive and unnecessary contract.

Firstly take into account how many minutes and text messages per month. If you have a contract already this is easily done by checking your mobile phone bills. If you are not on a contract take the amount you top up per month and divide it by the price of a cross net work call or text message this will give you a rough idea of how much you use your mobile phone.

Once you know how you use your phone you can decide whether it is worth it to go on a contract or stick to pay as you go. If you are currently topping up over £15 per month on pay as you go its worth moving to a contract. If you do stay on pay as you go it maybe an idea to purchase a deal that gives you free minutes or messages if you top up by £10 per month which will stretch your money further.

If you are going to purchase a contract deal its important to get a deal that includes how many minutes and messages you need. This may seem like common sense, but many people purchase deals that include a much higher usage than they need, therefore they are paying out a much higher direct debit per month then they don’t have too. Cashback deals can save you money but ensure you are not lured in to a deal over your usage just because you receive all of your line rental back as cashback. Remember you still need to pay the higher direct debit each month and your first cashback payment will only be paid out (usually) at the earliest at month 4 of your contract.

Automatic cashback deals are a good way to save money on your mobile phone deal, your cashback is sent automatically to you once you have been connected to your network for a month. You can also purchase deals like this but with free gifts such as TV’s, computer consoles or even hair strengtheners!

Remember to ensure you are going through a reputable company. Websites such as Money Saving Expert and OneCompare.com and AOL can help with this. If you go through a retailer that is powered by a large high street store you shouldn’t have any problems.

18 month contract deals usually offer you more minutes and text messages for a lower line rental than a 12 month contract. If you’re a techy bod make sure you can cope without a new handset for this long before you place your order. If you just need a phone and your not fussy about your handset or are happy with your old handset you can save money by going for a sim only deal. As the deal comes without a handset you get offered more minutes and messages for your monthly line rental, you are also only tied into a 1 month contract.

Finally if you are currently on a pay monthly deal but you are out of contract, contact your network and threaten that you are going to leave them. They will then put you through to what they call the ‘disconnections department’ were they will offer you better deals then they offer in their stores. Once they have told you what they can offer you can then compare this against new contract prices and see which is the cheapest.
