People with limited mobility have been given a chance at more independence and freedom with mobility scooters. In a variety of styles and brands, it may sometimes be difficult to determine which mobility scooter will best suit your individual needs. Having some knowledge of the factors involved in the decision will help you to know which scooter is best for you.

One thing to consider when purchasing a mobility scooter is your weight. While all mobility scooters are designed for optimal weight handling, smaller scooters are designed to handle up to 250 pounds, while more heavy duty scooters are designed to handle up to, and depending on the manufacturer, over 400 pounds. Knowing the weight restrictions can be a big factor in determining the best suitable mobility scooter for each individual.

Your height is another factor to consider. Portable scooters are excellent for travel, because they are lightweight and easily folded. These smaller scooters, however, have very little leg room. If you plan to use the scooter frequently, you should consider the comfort level that larger, more expensive models offer, particularly if you have problems with your knees or legs. Smaller scooters, however, are easily folded and placed into trunks, so if you plan to do a lot of traveling, then a smaller model may be more appropriate.

While three wheel scooters are excellent for traveling around indoors, if you plan to use your mobility scooter outdoors frequently, a four wheel scooter is much better designed for outdoor use. Knowing where you plan to use the scooter most will help with the overall purchase decision. Four wheel scooters offer much more stability, so if you plan to be in grass, rocks, or dirt, then the four wheel scooters are much better suited.

Another factor is the distance that you will be going in the mobility scooter. If you only plan to use it in and around your home, then a smaller model will be a good choice. However, if you plan to travel in the scooter over 10 miles, then larger models are designed to handle the longer distances much better.

Knowing how you will use the mobility scooter can help tremendously with the decision on which one you need. Discuss your requirements with a company representative or salesperson. They can help to ensure that you choose the most appropriate model for your individual needs.
