Selecting just the right corporate gifts can be a difficult process. You have to consider not only the occasion you’re giving the gift on, but also the person you’re giving it to. The “thank you” gift you give to a client might not be the same as the one you give to an employee, and it will be different again from a gift given on a more casual occasion. Giving corporate gifts requires that you make sure gifts are appropriate for both the occasion and the person—how can you do that, and be sure the recipient will actually like the gift, too?

When choosing corporate gifts to give on a particular occasion, making your selection on the basis of price is often a good way of making sure the gift you give is appropriate. As a rule, casual gifts that don’t need a special occasion to distribute are inexpensive—items such as mugs, mouse mats, pens and key rings are good examples of such gifts.

Inexpensive corporate gifts of this type are ideal for casual the gift-giving that you do on a regular basis. They’re small, inexpensive gifts that can be given out often on any casual occasion—a purchase incentive item, gifts to give to new employees, or an informal gift for a client. Inexpensive gift items are also ideal for trade shows and other industry events where you might end up giving away a large number of items. These types of gifts will also be eye-catching, to grab the attention of people who pass by your booth. Items with bright colors, moving parts and unusual shapes are all good choices.

Expensive corporate gifts are best reserved for special occasions, both to keep your costs down, and to ensure that the gifts you give are appropriate for the event. Gifts of this type are often given to mark special company events, as a gift for a new client to thank them for their business, for a valued client you’ve been doing business with on a regular basis, or for an employee who’s been promoted. Such gifts can also be given to mark events in the personal lives of your employees and business associates.

Matching the gift to the occasion is also important. If you keep items such as bottles of wine and executive pen sets or paperweights on hand for formal corporate gift giving, you’ll need to consider which type of gift is best suited to each occasion where you intend to hand out a gift. An executive pen set, for example, is ideal for giving to an employee who has earned a promotion, but it would not necessarily be a good choice for an employee who has just celebrated the birth of their first child—in this case, the wine would be a more appropriate choice.

Selecting gifts that people will want to use is another key consideration. The best way of approaching this concept is to choose functional gifts that people will enjoy using or find useful. Desk top items that are useful at work are ideal, as well as items such as conference folders and bags that add convenience to peoples’ working lives. In most cases, it’s best to first consider the way in which you will distribute the items—either casually or formally—then think about what types of gifts your recipients will get the most use out of.
