Chinese New Year: a time to celebrate

Chinese New Year is a traditional festival, which falls on the first day of the first lunar month. The celebration lasts for a period of 15 days and is usually marked with public holiday. Gifts, cards are offered to the family members and the festival is celebrated with much pomp and show.

Chinese New Year, which is also known as spring festival is one of the most important traditional holidays. This festival starts on the first day of the first months of the Lunar month in the Chinese calendar and end on the fifteenth day. The last day of the festival is also called “Lantern festival”.

Each year this festival is celebrated by the large population of ethnic Chinese present all over the world. As it is the eve of New Year, it is celebrated with much fun fair. It is the time for re-union, thanksgiving all clubbed together. Traditionally, the root of the festival lies in paying to the almighty gods of earth and heaven along with asking peace and fortune for the family. Each day of the 15 day festival symbolizes the faith of Chinese in their culture and religion.

With the festival season on the cards, the Chinese start procuring gifts to their friends and families to commemorate the festival event. The gifts present an insight to the culture of Chinese and showcase their love and affection to wards their near and dear ones. Most of the Chinese prefer to gift red envelopes filled with lucky money, which is then presented over to children and unmarried couples. The colour red symbolizes fortune and the money is utilized to buy holiday treats.

Among the traditional Chinese gifts, the “lucky monkey” is the most sought after. However with the changing times, the gifts too have changed. Nowadays, the Chinese people prefer gifts like cell phones, I pods, laptops etc. wines are also preferred such as the dry wine, great wall dry wine, Medium dry wine are some of the top choices.

As you know, china has one of the oldest civilizations, rich of cultural heritage and they definitely take pride in it. The ancient Chinese crafts are still in demand right from embroidery, to beautiful paper cuttings, calligraphy and they are meant for special occasions such as the Chinese New Year.

There are also special new year greeting cards, which are intended to pass messages to the near and dear ones, wishing them good luck and fortune. The prevalence of internet has paved the way for e- cards, which can be sent to any one without writing it out at any point of time to any part of the world.
