Stolen mobile phone reselling is big business, make sure you are not caught out when shopping for a bargain on the internet.

You may have been unfortunate enough to have had your mobile phone stolen, or maybe even lost your handset. In 2006 over 800,000 mobile phones were either stolen, lost or blocked. It’s estimated that £2.6 billion worth of stolen mobile phones are being sold on the internet in the UK.

With millions of people using websites such as EBay and Facebook’s market place to find a bargain, or to make some extra cash by selling their unwanted clutter via ‘faceless selling’ its no wonder that stolen goods make it on to these websites. CheckMEND is a website that the majority of the UK Police force use to check the legitimacy of property. It has carried out 10 million checks since its launch in 2006, and it has shown that the most common stolen items are mobile phones, this is followed by cameras, bikes, iPods, laptops, PCs, TVs and gaming consoles. The system allows the police to identify stolen goods quickly and simply.

CheckMEND is not just used by the Police, consumers can use it as well to ensure goods that they are purchasing are legitimate products. It costs £2.99 for a CheckMEND report. Unfortunately I feel that although £2.99 isn’t much to pay out to make sure your goods are not stolen, people who buy ‘bargains’ from online auction sites will most probably not want to pay any extra costs that they don’t have too.

CheckMEND is an excellent idea and will hopefully reduce the amount of stolen property being sold especially over the internet. A good idea would be to request a CheckMEND report from the seller before you purchase any goods from them, if the goods are legitimate the seller should have no problems providing CheckMEND details.
