For anyone keen on fishing, its impossible to miss pictures of huge carps being caught, and for many this is a big enough reason to begin fishing in France alone! However, there is more to French carp fishing in such a brilliant country. |

As well being being an easy place to visit for a holiday, France has an unbelievable amount of fishing opportunities for the hobbyist throughout the whole country. As well as lake fishing, since it has over 6000 miles of coastline it is great for sea fishing too. As well as the almost normal 40lb carps, France's lakes have huge catfish and sturgeon.
Although the UK has some great fishing venues, because of its size France has many fishing lakes that are untamed, rarely visited and therefore not often fished. This means that the chances of catching a fish that has never been caught.
What is the biggest carp caught in France?
This is the reason why most come to France, for the glory! And its easy to see why, because France holds the record for the biggest caught carp at a massive 83lbs (compared to a more common 20lbs carp you'd find in the UK) With there being so many untamed lakes in the country, could you be the one to beat it?
Part of the reason why the fish are also so big because of a factors that include the warmer water temperature, greater abundance of food for the fish and the lakes are easily big enough to cater for a large eco system. The French carp are also left in peace most of the time, which of course allows them to grow at a more normal rate than in over fished lakes.
Do you need a license to fish in France?
To fish in France you will need a fishing licence to fish in rivers, streams and lakes unless they are privately owned (such as Willow Valley Lake) or booked as a fishing holiday.
To gain a permit, this can be obtained at a local fishing tackle shop and some local bars. If you're unsure where to go, contact the Local Tourist Information Board.
There are a number of different permits but the simplest solution is the Carte de Pêche de Vacances for trips for two weeks or under. This covers you for all types of fishing. It can be used between 1st June and 30th November, so if you're visiting France outside of these dates an annual fishing licence is mandatory.
An annual permit can be used for the whole year but please bear in mind that this will only be for one department unless you get it stamped for different areas that you may go to.
Why go on a fishing holiday in France?
Many people go on organised fishing holidays in France to private lakes as it avoids the complicated license issues. Another great advantage is that night fishing (prohibited in general) is allowed on the majority of private fishing lakes (ours included!).
Some public fishing locations allow night fishing but a bivvy or tent is often banned, so often you have to make do with an umbrella! Ultimately, comfort is a big reason to go on an organised fishing holiday, as relaxing is what its all about!
