If your child required cardiopulmonary resuscitation at birth that is another indication your child may have sustained a brain injury caused by lack of oxygen (hypoxia).
Factors Leading to Birth Injuries
• Fetal distress
• Breathing problems
• Abnormal position of fetus
• Prolapsed umbilical cord (cord precedes baby)
• Umbilical cord wrapped around neck
• Premature labor
• Failure to perform cesarean section in timely manner
Birth injuries are not congenital; therefore, it stands to reason they can be prevented with good obstetrical and neonatal care. Birth injuries are usually caused by something that went wrong during the birthing process. For instance, Cerebral palsy is a chronic medical condition caused by damage to the brain at the time of labor and/or delivery.
Prolonged or difficult labor, also referred to as dystocia can lead to birth injuries if the labor lasts past 18 hours. Dystocia can cause a lack of oxygen to the fetus as well as a prolapsed umbilical cord. Internal fetal monitoring can cause scalp injuries and bleeding to the fetal head when sensors are attached.
Fractures of the clavicle or collarbone occur when pressure is put on the clavicle while delivering the shoulders. A broken clavicle will also cause bruising of the skin covering the broken bone.
