One should have a huge learning from this. University students Gesh and George were part of a save-environment brigade and wanted people on campus to get into a car pool. The initiative developed to decrease traffic and parking problems on the campus, improve its environment and save students and staff their money.
Students were concerned enough to respond to the two top environmental concerns on campus, which were accessible transportation and recycling. The car pool idea was a way to address the first environmental concern that students had.
Chelsea, another student who joined among the first ones on the service said that she lived too far away to cycle to campus, and she found going by bus too time consuming. The students’ car share facility is simple to use. Potential users can register themselves both to offer and avail the car sharing arrangement. Users are not checked on the antecedents. Hence the operators themselves must do the needful.
Car pooling is not about taking care of what one wishes to have in the arrangement. Thus a set of reasonable rules have to be in place. For instance, if one member wishes to listen to cricket commentary or music while sharing ride with others and the noise disturbs even one member then the system must be switched off or used with the help of an ear phone.
A number of universities in India support huge and expansive campuses where walking to and fro is both time consuming and tiring. Car pool would be an ideal arrangement and that could be organised with the help of university administration.
Of course for such an arrangement to exist desired rules have to be in place so that they the arrangement does not exist for the undue inconvenience of one at the cost of other member. In a number of educational campuses you may find dedicated bus service between the universities and the main city centers. But this cannot be as convenient, useful and fun as car pooling.
