Walking barefoot on a cold winter morning on naked wooden/iron/stone steps to that of treading over a carpeted counterpart unfailingly shows why floors made of carpet attracts many.

You can select carpets to match the color scheme. Today’s carpets are stain resistant if not entirely stain free. It is easier to lay carpet over a naked wooden/iron stair. However, carpets are difficult to clean especially in certain corners of the house. They tend to wear off faster more so in heavy activity areas like stairs. They are prone to causing allergies and especially the commonly used synthetic carpets are a nightmare for environmentalists since they do not degrade easily. Wood floors are easy to clean and maintain and do not cause allergies. Despite the initial higher cost wood floors pay off in the long run. But, carpets and stairs are a great combination. There are a couple of good reasons for this. Carpeted stairs are far safer and cheaper than wood. Frequent vacuuming and shampooing can increase the life of the carpet.

Installing a carpet on stairs can be done in more than one way. One method known as the waterfall method uses one single carpet piece for covering both tread and riser. The tread is the flat portion of the staircase and riser the vertical portion. In the cap and band method the cap goes over the tread and the band goes over the riser. If you want to show off your wood you could carpet only the tread. Stairs get maximum traffic in a house especially if you have young children. In order to prevent excessive wear, carpet stair treads are placed on the stairs. These treads are of polypropylene or other kinds of plastic. Treads also help add traction thereby preventing accidental tripping while running down the stairs.
