Car Accident Statistics |
||||
|
Car accidents are the number one cause of death for people between the ages of 4 and 34. As our nation’s population continues to grow, streets and highways across America have become more congested than ever, making what should be a simple daily commute into a potentially dangerous situation. |

Every ten seconds, a car accident victim is treated in a hospital emergency room for their injuries. Every five minutes, someone dies from accident-related injuries. Below are some of the more general statistics related to car accidents:
• Distracted driving is the leading cause of car accidents
• 60% of fatal car accidents involving teenagers are due to alcohol
• Men are twice as likely to die in a car accident than women
• One out of every three teenage deaths is because of a car accident
• Most car accidents occur an average of 1.4 miles away from the driver’s home
Teens are four times as likely to be involved in a car accident, although new laws – such as driving curfews and other regulations – are gradually helping to reduce the number of accidents involving teenagers. Still, these numbers prove difficult to change, and those who survive severe car accidents are often forced to contend with serious injuries that will affect them for the rest of their lives.
National Statistics for Car Accidents in 2010
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently released car accident statistics for 2010 to the public. Some of the key data points include:
• 32,146 fatal car accidents occurred
• 15,419 fatal car accidents were caused by drunk driving
• Over half of the reported fatalities involved people who did not wear a seatbelt
• 82% of rollover crashes resulted in death
What is even more unsettling about these statistics is the fact that 90% of all car accidents are preventable. Driver error or negligence is the cause of the vast majority of collisions. When people are seriously injured because of someone else’s recklessness or neglect, they can hold that person accountable through a personal injury claim.
Car Accidents in Maryland
In the state of Maryland, more people are killed by car accidents than by homicides. On average, around 580 die every year in car accidents, and almost 37,000 are injured.
