I am a lover of scented candles, so I hate to think that candles cause fires. The fact is though, that they can and do. Please use the following tips if you light candles in your home. Taking these precautions may save you from the heartbreak of a home fire.

• Keep your wicks trimmed to Ό”.

• Do not burn candles under a ceiling fan or in a draft.

• Remember to extinguish all candles before retiring for the night.

• Do not burn a candle to the very bottom.

• Keep candles away from children and pets.

• Make sure that taper candles fit snugly in their holder so they don’t topple over.

• Do not leave burning candles unattended.

I read a story recently about a woman who lost her home and two beloved dogs in a house fire. She left home to run an errand and left a candle burning. An unattended candle started a fire in a very short time. Please don’t let this happen to you. This kind of tragedy can be avoided by following just a few guidelines.

If you are burning a candle and notice that the flame is too large and seems to be “dancing”, extinguish the flame. Wait until the candle cools completely, trim the wick, and relight it. Sometimes a wick will develop a big bulb at the top. This causes the flame to be large and unruly.

When trimming a wick, make sure that it does not fall into the candle. It will add extra fire-power to your candle when it is re-lit.

If a tragedy should occur in spite of all your efforts, and your home is on fire, take the following steps:

• Get out of the house! There is no time to make a call or gather valuables.

• Crawl low on your hands and knees to the nearest exit.

• If your clothing is on fire, STOP, DROP AND ROLL. Do not run. Your clothing will only burn faster.

• Once out of your house, STAY OUT! Do not re-enter for any reason.

• Call 911 from a remote location.

Candles cause fires. We have to remember that each time we light them. Go ahead and make your home a cozy retreat by burning them, but keep these safety tips in mind. If we fail to take precautions, the tragic loss of homes, family members, or beloved pets is a real possibility.
