Candidates for Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a vein treatment that has been proven effective in eliminating spider and varicose veins. Sclerotherapy is performed by injecting a salt solution directly into large, obvious veins.

This solution blocks off the veins, reducing their appearance and providing relief from the symptoms of varicose veins such as skin discoloration, swelling, discomfort and ulcers.

Am I a Candidate for Sclerotherapy?

If you have large, dark, painful varicose veins, you may be an ideal candidate for sclerotherapy. This is a procedure best performed by an experienced endovascular specialist and, during your initial consultation, your doctor will better be able to evaluate your candidacy.

While this is a safe procedure, it may not be ideal for everyone. Women who are pregnant are not eligible for this treatment. In addition, people taking certain medications may need to stop using them prior to treatment. Your endovascular doctor will discuss this with you in full during your consultation.

People with certain medical conditions or a history of blood clots may not be eligible for sclerotherapy. This will need to be determined on an individual basis by your doctor. Choosing a doctor who specializes in vein treatment will provide you with a more reliable opinion, and may give you additional options for treatment.

Other Treatment Options

If you are not a candidate for sclerotherapy, you may still be eligible for other varicose vein treatments including endovenous laser therapy (EVLT). With EVLT, a laser is used to close off varicose veins, eliminating the need for injections and often reducing potential complications. This treatment option may be available if you are not an ideal candidate for sclerotherapy, or your doctor may recommend varicose vein surgery.

There is no single option ideally suited to meet the needs of every patient. Based on your medical history and the extent of your varicose veins, your endovascular doctor will be able to help you determine what option is best for you.

The important thing to remember is that varicose veins are treatable. This unsightly and often painful condition can lead to serious medical problems such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism if left untreated. It is always best to discuss your varicose veins with your doctor as soon as they become apparent.
