You can use a GFI in an underground outlet, but you need to have a point of access to the receptacle. These outlets are designed to be used outside and near areas that will get wet. An underground electrical outlet is rarely used in homes today. Most GFI needs are above ground so they are easily accessible for troubleshooting or testing. For sump pumps in homes, the GFI outlet is near the pump, but is accessible by the homeowner to test the outlet, which is recommended once a month. The ground fault interrupters are approved for outdoors and in basements that run sump pumps.

If you need a receptacle outside for landscape lighting or ponds, a GFI receptacle is needed. The building code requires this type of electrical outlet. You can place the outlet close to the ground to hide it from view. An underground outlet can cause problems if it is not easily accessible. Septic tanks will use an underground GFI outlet. These outlets are protected and there is access to the receptacles in case there is problem. Having an experienced electrician install the receptacles the proper way is the best and usually required by law. If you need to have an underground outlet installed, call a professional and licensed electrician who will do the wiring and installation the proper way so it meets the requirements of the building and housing authority and will pass inspection.
