Caller ID spoofing, for those who don’t know, is the act of manipulating what someone sees on their call display when you call them. Instead of blocking your number or revealing your real one, you can choose any number you like to display.
Spoofing providers have been around for several years now. SpoofTel, now the longest running caller ID spoofing provider on the web, has been in business since 2004. Most caller ID spoofing users praise it while others still find it rather taboo. Some people are still wary about the potential for fraud or other illegal uses it may entice. However, most caller ID spoofing providers take great care in preventing this type of activity and some are even willing to work with law enforcement to thwart users from attempting to use it maliciously.
In fact, caller ID spoofing is used by law enforcement to help catch suspects and criminals. It is also used by professionals. When calling clients, professionals can place the call from their home or cell phone and have it appear as though they are calling from the office. Celebrities use it to keep their number private when calling even friends and family. It helps in the event someone’s phone is ever lost or stolen with their number listed in the call display. Regular individuals use it as well when responding to ads or returning calls to people they don’t really know. It can be quite helpful if meeting people through a dating service as it allows you to connect with others without revealing your real phone number.
Due to the number of uses it has, caller ID spoofing is continuing to grow in popularity. In addition to caller ID spoofing, some providers, such as SpoofTel, have added additional options that include SMS (text message) spoofing, voice changing, call scheduling, and call recording.
