Cabo Roig – Review of a Costa Blanca Resort.

Cabo Roig – Review of a Costa Blanca Resort.

Author: Steve Locke

Read about the popular Costa Blanca resort of Cabo Roig, what to see and what to do.

The exclusive Costa Blanca resort of Cabo Roig is situated on the Orihuela Costa section of the coastline between Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada.

The clean “blue flag” beaches, the beautiful cliff walks and the bustling Cabo Roig “strip” attract holidaymakers from all over the world. Very popular with the British and Irish, Cabo Roig also attracts a large number of Spanish visitors during the hot summer season, the Spanish particularly love the beach and the sea. Well placed for visiting the entire Costa Blanca region, Cabo Roig is an ideal location for a touring holiday. Cabo Roig is often quiet during the winter and spring and this can be a good time to visit as even in December and January the temperature can be up in the 70’s.

The obtrusive watchtower which is the most famous landmark of Cabo Roig dates from the 16th century and was originally built to warn of attacks from Berber pirates who assailed the coastline in those long gone times.

The tower now adjoins a restaurant, a great place for a quiet drink as it looks down over the marina and across the sea to La Manga. This is also the starting point for the wonderful cliff walk to La Zenia.

The two primary beaches of Cabo Roig (Cala Caleta and Cala Capitan) are both exceptionally popular and are kept clean, tidy and well maintained. The beach bar at Cala Caleta is a popular place for a tapas snack and even the odd midnight cocktail or two, during the hot summer months and the bar is often open until 4am. But be careful, negotiating your way back to the main road can be tricky by moonlight, especially when a little the worse for a drink or three!

Whilst on a trip to Cabo Roig do not miss the cliff walk to La Zenia, this walk takes you along the back of Cala Caleta beach, above the marina and onwards to Cala Capitan and then to La Zenia beach. This is a very enjoyable walk and offers some exceptional views of the surrounding coastline, don’t forget to take your camera or you will miss some great photo opportunities. You will spot La Manga in the distance and on a clear day you can pick out the towering apartment blocks of this up and coming resort.

The climate in Cabo Roig is warm and temperate and it is considered to be one of the healthiest places to live. The summers are warm and dry with temperatures sometimes reaching 40 degrees centigrade in July and August, the average temperature through the year is approximately 20 degrees centigrade with winter temperatures rarely falling below 10 degrees. Rainfall is scarce and occasional and occurs mostly during the winter.

For your evening entertainment you will probably want to head for the popular Cabo Roig “strip” (also known as Aguamarina Strip), here you will find a mind-boggling variety of bars and restaurants offering plenty of entertainment and culinary delights. There are also an increasing number of shops opening up although the strip is still missing a big supermarket.

There is plenty to see and do in and around Cabo Roig, and having a rental car would be a great advantage. For golfers there are 3 excellent golf courses within a 5 minute drive and other no more than a half hour away.

The go-karts at Punta Prima will be popular with the children and this is a great place to spend an hour or two, they offer cars for all age groups and abilities and even have some mini-carts and mini-quads for the young ones. Be sure to take a trip into the local town of Torrevieja, the busy Friday market is huge and is well worth a visit.

So this is Cabo Roig “the jewel of the Costa Blanca”, a perfect spot to re-locate, an ideal destination for a family holiday or just a nice place for a short visit.

Very handy for both Murcia (San Javier) and Alicante airports, Cabo Roig is situated on the N-332 coastal road between Pilar de la Horadada and Torrevieja.

It can also be easily accessed from the AP-7 motorway, junction 763 (La Zenia) or junction 768 (Dehesa de Campoamor).
