Hound dogs are used for hunting activities that usually involve long chases as well as tracking animals such as coyote, raccoon and other huge predators. Other animals can fall on a Hound dog’s prey because of its furious running speed. Some popular examples of Hound dogs are Sighthounds, which, in general are extremely fast dogs. Scenthounds are considered to have the keenest sense of smell and primarily make use of its olfactory sense rather its sense of sight. They usually follow tracks with their deep, roaring voice. Lurchers, on the other hand, are a combination of cross breed Sighthounds and a working breed dog.
Gun dogs make a good companion for hunters who take the thrill of small game hunting with the use of shotguns. Gundogs are classified into three major types such as the Pointers, Retrievers, Setters, Spaniels and Water Dogs. Pointers are specifically trained to track down small game for hunters. Retrievers, on the other hand, are known before as water spaniels. A Retriever’s primarily role is to locate and bring back shot games to the hunter. The can stand in duck blinds for long hours and has an amazing ability to spot a bird that was shot down from among many ducks. They can even plunge into cold waters to recover the birds one by one. This has earned the title of being known as ‘unsurpassed water dogs’. Retrievers are also very keen in following down whistles, as well as verbal and hand signs by their hunters to retrieve downed animals even at distances.
Meanwhile, Setters are instinctively able to spot upland game birds. They can distract birds with its cunning stance so that the hunter can fire away at them. Spaniels have been long time hunting companions for over a hundred years already. They are not only excellent for small game and upland game bird hunting; they can also be excellent pets in the home. Water dogs, in addition, are the subclass of a Retriever.
Terriers are used exclusively for hunting mammals. They can spot their prey’s hideout or habitat before attacking them with force. Curs have the same role as with terriers but are used in a larger game. Curs usually hunt larger mammals such as cougars, hogs, hunts and raccoon, among others.
Hunting can be very exciting with these hunting dogs if they perform well, so you must choose well which type of hunting dog to bring for a particular type of hunting game. Remember though, not to abuse and take too much advantage of what a hunting dog can do for you.
