As a leader people look up to you, many are most likely intimidated by your position, and perhaps even by you. Since the most important asset to any organization is the followers it is important for you to take steps to build relationships with them. The relationship you create with them is what everything rests upon. Once you know your followers, you become more knowledgeable about their skills, talents, passions, and aspirations. By building a relationship with followers you also begin to understand what motivates and inspires them.

Many leaders find it difficult, even awkward building relationships with followers. Just know that it takes time and commitment on your part – but the good news is that by just being yourself, and letting your guard down just a little, in time it is possible to build relationships with them. Start by breaking bread with them, meaning sit and eat with them, it can be over breakfast, or over lunch. Sharing a meal is an easy and effective way of getting personal without being overly pushy.

Regardless of how your schedule is, make time to eat with your followers – forget the private lunch in your office. Say goodbye to your office and hello to the break room. The reaction you’ll receive as people see you initially will be quite remarkable, but over time, people will let their guard down and meal time will become a special time for you and your followers to bond together and build an even stronger relationship with each other.
