Vibration Reduction
Unless you have your camera on a tripod, hand holding a camera some times the picture comes out blurred. When you press the button to take a picture the camera shakes a little and the picture gets blurred. If you are excited and try to take a picture on the fly the picture can be blurry. If it is cold the same scenario, blurry picture. Binoculars equipped with a vibration reduction feature there is no need for a tripod they are unaffected by either shake or roll, and allows stable viewing even when panning or tilting. Some use a servo control system with the prisms supported by gimbals to provide a view that is unaffected by either shake or vibration.
Features That Are Optional?
The VR (vibration reduction) was a feature that greatly enhanced my experience so I would say that was not just an optional feature. It made all the difference between a good trip and a great trip. High magnification viewing, waterproof, fogproof are other you should not consider to be optional. Look for lenses that are fully multicoated, and prisms that are phase-correction coated for the ultimate in brightness and resolution.
