Bedroom Lighting Advice

Bedroom Lighting Advice

Author: David Madams

The bedroom is nowadays not only a place for sleeping. We often read or watch TV in bed, dress ourselves or put on make up. All this means that a mixture of lighting needs to be installed to allow the bedroom to be functional.

Instead of fitting one central light in the ceiling, use a mixture of wall and table lamps. This will create a nice atmosphere and cut out glare.

If you like reading in bed, you should consider installing a bedside lamp. This kind of lighting will also be suitable for watching your favourite programs. You might want to fit an adjustable wall light. It is very handy as you can change the direction of light.

Bedside lamps are very handy as they allow access without getting out of bed.

For applying make up in the bedroom, your mirrors should be framed with light as you need to see yourself clearly. If you place the source of light above or below the mirror, it will create shadows. What’s more, it will also cause glare as the light will shine directly on a mirror.

You might also want to illuminate the interior of your wardrobes and cupboards. It seems to be good idea that lights come on when the door is open.

Consider using dimmer lights as they will allow you to obtain different moods in your bedroom.

Baby and children’s bedroom need another kind of lighting than adult ones. For late night feeds a small table lamp or nightlight is what a mum needs, whereas a ceiling light controlled by a dimmer will be source of good general light.

Small babies and toddlers are very curious so you need to make sure all the fittings, cables and switches can’t be reached. Consider fitting fixed lights. They are out of reach of active toddlers.

Children get older fast. As they grow, they need different lighting for doing homework, reading or using a computer. Those tasks require glare free light. Nowadays there are many types of light designed especially for children. They encourage use with their bright colours and cartoon characters.
