It is inevitable that you will run into something on the internet that could cause your computer harm, and the worst part about it is that you may not even know. However, by putting a few simple measures in place you can protect your system and your family.

By downloading anything from music, email attachments, free software, or anything else, you could be exposing your system to malicious programs.

Even surfing to certain websites can cause you problems later on by allowing them to install viruses and spyware to your computer. These cause harm to your computer, slow it down, and can open doors for identity thieves to track which websites you’re on and even steal personal information. In order to protect yourself you need to somehow protect your computer and limit the risks involved with web surfing.

You need to have anti-virus software installed on your computer. With the sophistication of viruses these days, this is an essential first step. You need to be protected from the latest threats with software that is updated often and has good customer support. A firewall is also a great thing to have.

This is a barrier between your computer and the internet that scans all incoming files. It blocks suspicious content from entering your network. Nothing by itself can give you 100% protection, but in combination you have a greater chance of remaining safe.

While browsing the internet, you inadvertently download spyware. Spyware always others to spy on your activity. It’s sometimes grouped with adware to push ads to your computer. Spyware can record personal information and send it to remote locations, leaving your computer open for attack and you for identity theft. You can prevent this with anti-spyware software that you can get free or pay for. It scans your system periodically, and also blocks incoming threats.

Make sure you research anything you try to download, get user reviews, and make sure it’s safe for your system. The time it takes you to do the research will save you much hassle and more time to remove spyware if you get infected. Don’t open email attachments unless you know the sender, and be wary of questionable websites that could contain spyware and adware.
