Learning Japanese as a foreign language is a very interesting process. The most inspiring element about this language is its script. As we all know Japanese language has three scripts namely hiragana, katakana and kanji which are interesting to learn and to write. Once you understand the basic Japanese grammar then it is not difficult to use it while speaking or writing.

Since the very first day you start learning Japanese you are introduced to the basic Japanese sentences which help you introduce yourself in Japanese. As these are the first sentences which the students learn they are very excited and happy to know them.

After completely learning the first two scripts which are hiragana and katakana then the teachers gradually start teaching them the basic Japanese grammar. A golden rule when you start learning Japanese grammar is that never relate it with English language grammar as they both are very different from each other. The basic difference is the structure of the sentence. In English grammar the sentence structure is [subject][verb][object]. On the other hand a Japanese sentence should always end in a verb hence the sentence structure is always [subject][object][verb].

Particles are a very crucial part of the Japanese grammar along with the other elements like adjectives, verbs, adverbs and Japanese greetings. In Japanese grammar a single particle can have one or more than one use depending upon the context of the sentence. Hence it is very important to understand and memorize each use very keenly. An important point which should be remembered is that the use of particle changes the meaning of the entire sentence. For example if you use the “ga” particle instead of a “wa” particle it will change the meaning of the given sentence. Therefore even if you are constructing the smallest Japanese sentence you should be very careful about which particle should be used.

It is not at all necessary that while constructing sentences in Japanese language they should be long. On the other hand it is always preferred that one makes small or short but meaningful sentences. It is said that a person who has learnt just the entry level Japanese should not make big sentences because bigger the sentence the more grammatically wrong it is. At times it also results into conveying some wrong meaning or message.

When you start forming sentences in Japanese language it is very important that you have learnt some basic vocabulary. If you are well-versed with the vocabulary then you will not face much difficulty in using the correct words at the right places. Also think about the tense of the verb which should be used. As Japanese language has only one form of the verb for both the present and future tense do not get confused while making use of it. So, “Gambatte kudasai” to all of you.

Finally a good practice which I would like to share with all of you is that as and when you learn new grammar try and make as many sentences of your own as possible so that you get habituated to it and it is no more a new grammar pattern for you.
