When all this information is fed in electronic software systematically and is easily accessible to both the patient and the physician, we call this as an electronic health record of the patient. Electronic health record systems are digital record formats that can be shared across networks that are connected through wide range information systems. These records usually include the medical history, lab reports, and allergies – natural and to administered drugs, radiology information, immunization, the dosage of the drugs prescribed and the billing information.
These electronic health record systems are of great help when a physician is able to get an overview of a patient's condition quickly, by one glance, in the first consultation and is able to diagnose properly instead of going through the tedious process of creating a medical history on paper all over again. These systems enable the health care professionals to manage records better, as accessing these online is any day easier and quicker than hunting down a file through the records. The only drawback to these systems is that feeding the information every now and then by the physician becomes a bit time consuming unless the doctor is used to the software being used.
In case of Bariatrics patients these systems help a great deal as they have to go for regular check ups after the surgery. Follow ups are crucial as these patients are sensitive to complications after the surgery. Patients for example who opt for gastric bypass procedure for surgery get their digestive system altered in order to limit the amount of food that is consumed. After the procedure these patients are kept on a strict diet that usually progresses from no food to liquids to solid intake. This procedure reflects normal, short term and long term side effects depending on the patient's body and lifestyle.
Sudden weight loss, vomiting and pain in upper stomach while moving from liquids to solids, headaches, hair loss etc. are some of the common and normal side effects. A bout of pneumonia, infections around the incisions made during the procedure, venous thrombosis or blood clots in the leg are some of the risks that are short term risks. Long term risks involve neurological disorders and other systemic malfunctions.
Electronic health records have proven to be a boon, as patients have more time to tend to themselves than the paperwork that usually follows after a brief medical sabbatical.
