Experience shows that bariatric surgery not only helps the patient to dramatic weight loss but also helps with a series of obesity related conditions.

A number of surgical procedures are available today all of them laparoscopic meaning that only a few small incisions are made on the abdomen leaving no visible ugly scar. These procedures help the morbidly obese patients (Body Mass Index of 40 or higher) to efficiently lose substantial weight. After bariatric surgery, patients need to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

The gastric bypass procedure provides a durable weight loss. It involves bypassing a large part of the stomach by attaching the lower part of the small intestine to a small pouch created in the upper part of the stomach dividing it in two.

The sleeve gastrectomy involves removing close to three quarters of the stomach creating a “sleeve” which helps controlling the intake of the food amount.

In the gastric plication procedure, the stomach is folded over and stitched to itself.

The Lap-Band procedure involves an adjustable band filled with saline going around the upper part of the stomach creating a small pouch which will fill very quickly and the sensation of hunger disappears.

Recovery time after weight loss surgery is relatively short, about 2-3 days. The major complication rate at these procedures is low.

If some of the patients after successfully undergoing weight loss surgery after some time regain weight and become obese again, they are advised to have revision procedures.

This kind of procedure is for example the ROSE (standing for Restorative Obesity Surgery, Endoluminal). With this procedure, no incision is required; it is done through the mouth. The restriction of the stomach from the intial bariatric surgery is recreated.

The Band over Bypass is for the patients who had gastric bypass surgery before. It is similar to the Lap-Band, a band goes around the stomach.
