There have been few instances wherein online advertising looked for its print counterpart to set the standards. As there is a lot of divergence in their operations and the very nature of these two media platforms, what applies to one cannot be replicated in the other. Online marketers are keenly taking up Banner advertising for their marketing campaigns.

There are a few tools and techniques have been duly adopted by online advertisers, including the concept of banners. In print versions or dailies there is a term called banner head that refers to the major story headline spread on the cover page, just below the name of the daily. This space is considered as the most important one in the newspaper and researches have proved that a majority of the people would focus on this particular space. Over the years we have developed a habit of looking at it the moment we unfold the paper. This particular aspect was carefully examined by the pioneers of online advertising and thus gave rise to a practice called banner advertising.

Banner ads are advertisements that appear on any website and direct the users to yet other website or web page. Online advertisers sell the banner space to different owners who want more traffic coming to their website. The advertisement is usually constructed from an image or script program, more like a printed ad. Visitors, who come to the site, if they feel motivated, click on the banner and the browser loads the page to which it has been directed to. To make them more appealing, banners have been constructed by employing animation scripts and sounds. The advertisements are sometimes provided by the servers.

The number of clicks produced on the banner determines the cost that the advertiser has to pay to any website owner who allows such advertisements. To avoid the fraudulent clicks, a set of log files are automatically created that monitor different activities happening on the banners.

Thus banner advertising, which has been more or less derived from the concept of banner heads of news journals, is one realistic measure to sell the online space.
