ID badges are in widespread use in almost every business situation. At one time, they were most common in only secured facilities but now nearly every business uses employee identification badges of one type or another. ID badges can be made in only a few moments with new technology such as the Zebra card printer and now companies issue them to identify their employees to the public as well as to each other.

However, an ID badge or security badge is not as helpful if it cannot be seen easily and that is where badge holders come in handy for both employee and employer. Protection of the contact circuitry if the badge contains one, as well as protection and display of the badge itself is one of the functions of the badge holder.

Not only with the appropriate holders display the ID on the employee but they can also be color coded if certain areas are restricted or when used by guests in an area for easy identification of guests. Such ID holders may slip into a pocket or clip on with the aid of a small metal clip.

Proximity cards contain an integrated circuit that require special care and proximity holders are specially designed to secure these badges and protect against loss or damage. Straps can lock the card to the holder and prevent the proximity card slipping out. Since these cards are usually a little more expensive and used by a large number of high security and government agencies then it is important to protect them.

Though clips and lanyards are secure means of attaching the badge holder to clothing, a magnetic badge holder can provide a very professional look without the clips that might mar a professional business suit. These holders come with two magnets one attached to the badge holder and the other placed in the inside of the clothing.

Large groups such as conferences and conventions often use ID badges and though they are only in use for a few hours or days, a means of attaching the ID badge is important. Normally badge holders used for those purposes will be a lighter material (less durable) and less expensive as well since they will normally not be used for long.

Just as technology has made id badge printing inexpensive for the normal business, the types of holders for these badges have become more purpose driven too. Security, economy, identification, all can be well served by choosing the right type of badge holder.

Many companies will provide a badge holder when the employee is issued an identification badge they must display. However not all of these are suitable to every employee's style and their work environment. In the case where a holder is not issued but only a badge, then employees may purchase a badge holder that feels more secure or avoids damage to their clothing or hangs from their belt not their pocket or collar. There is a badge holder for every purpose.
