Nothing is more frustrating or embarrassing than having airport security rummage through your personal belongings in front of other passengers. From making you remove items to clothing, to forcing you to open your carry-on luggage, airport security can be a real hassle.

Security precautions have never been more thorough, and as a result, a security check-point can slow your travel plans considerably. However, by understanding and preparing for the latest security measures, you should be able to breeze through and get on with your holiday.

Understanding Your Limitations: Know Airport Security

One of the biggest concerns that passengers face is liquid restrictions. Although these restrictions have become slightly more relaxed in European Union airports, there are still some considerations to keep in mind.

Most importantly, passengers are not able to carry more than 100 ml of liquid into the airport and are unable to carry any liquids, aerosols, or gels in their hand luggage.

What’s in a Liquid?

According to the BBC website on travel security, the definition of liquids can include:

• Pressurised containers, toothpaste, hair gel, syrups, perfume, deodorant, shaving foam, aerosols, drinks

• Gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures

Today, the following liquids are permitted in your hand luggage:

• Baby milk and liquid baby food (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the passenger).

• Prescription medicines in liquid form sufficient and essential for the flight.

• Any liquid items purchased after passing through security.

As you prepare your hand luggage try not to be too frustrated with these restrictions. Remember, they have been put in place to ensure your safety and respond to the threat that liquid explosives can pose.

Other Security Checks

You can also be held up in security when you hand luggage is too large. The dimensions of hand luggage must not exceed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, which is the equivalent to the size of a small roller suitcase.

Moreover, although permitted, laptops and large electrical items will be screened by airport security. When carrying these items, you may be asked by a security official to turn on the electrical item to prove that it is functioning.

Pushchairs and walking aids must be screened by an X-Ray. If travelling with a wheelchair, be prepared to have your wheelchair thoroughly searched.

Final Points

The purpose of this article is not only to prepare you for the security challenges that you may face on your flight, but also to ensure that you have a pleasant security experience. Here a few more tips to get your vacation off too a great start:

• Pack all questionable items at the top of your luggage. This will make them easily accessible for security and quick to repack.

• Ensure that all batteries are charged for electronics.

• Allow yourself plenty of time. You will be less frustrated by a slow security check if you are not rushed for your flight.
