Shirley had won this dog from the local raffle and was determined that she was going to like him no matter what his infirmities. She had a husband like that. Once upon a time he had been the sweetest, most generous of beaus, but he had turned into a drinker and a rabble rouser just like the rest of his folks. She was adamant that the dog wasn’t going to follow the same path. She started feeding him four or five times a day to see if he would get better if she fed him out, but he just got fat, lazy and wrinkly like her husband. She called the poor soul out from under the porch, and as the dog squeezed out of a three foot hole the Stanley Home Products man said he had one just like him only not so fat. He was called a Sharpei and they were supposed to have all those wrinkles. Shirley just breathed a sigh of relief. Her husband had talked about putting him out of his misery, but now Shirley had a reason to keep him. She had grown fonder of that dog than her own spouse.
