The first settlers in the region of Algorfa seem to be from the Neolithic Era (4,000 2,000 BC) some of the remains of whom were found in 1903 by a Jesuit archaeologist together with some primitive tools and implements.
When a privilege was granted by king Alfonso II in 1328 the municipality of Algorfa officially came into being and the village consisted of 15 homes and 15 families. After the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714) Felipe V withdrew the privilege, though it was later restored king Carlos IV towards the end of the 18th Century.
Present day Algorfa is a quiet and friendly place, village life centres mostly around the charming village square where most of the local festivities and activities are held. The square is also the location of the Town Hall (completed in 2004), the police station and the church plus several bars and restaurants where locals and visitors alike can enjoy a cooling drink and watch the world go by. Visitors are always given a smile and a warm welcome in Algorfa.
The beautiful Mediterranean climate is one of the main things that make Algorfa so special and the village basks in over three hundred days of sunshine every year. It seldom rains in Algorfa the Segura river basin is renowned for having the least rainfall in Spain, and the mean annual temperature is usually in the region of 19 degrees centigrade.
Places to visit around Algorfa include the Palace of the Marquis de Fontabla in the nearby village of Jacarilla, the neo-gothic 19th Century church between Algorfa and Benejuzar. The cave houses (featuring a craft market) at Rojales, the bustling town of Torrevieja with its huge Friday market and the Natural Park of the Salt Lakes at La Mata.
Algorfa also has its own busy market held on a Sunday and always worth a trip.
The more energetic visitor may wish to make use of Algorfas sporting facilities these include the recreation centre with a choice of sports which includes swimming, five-a-side soccer, squash and tennis. During the summer months a trip to the Aqua Park in the neighbouring town of Quesada would also be in order. Golfers will definitely wish to play a round or two on the nearby La Finca Golf Club this fine 18 hole championship course was designed by Jose Gancedo. The course is set in lovely natural surroundings and incorporates lakes with running water and reed beds to add difficulty and variety.
For those who like the beach and the sea, the coastal town of Guardamar del Segura is just a short drive away. Guardamar has some beautiful sandy beaches which are very popular during the summer months.
Thus ends our little trip to Algorfa the tiny Costa Blanca village with a big heart.
Algorfa is located on the Southern Costa Blanca and can be accessed from the CV-91 road between Guardamar del Segura and Orihuela. Also close by is junction 740 of the AP-7 motorway which runs from Crevillente to Cartagena.
